I would fully agree with you Chris that it is NOT a good idea to try to sell something in the first message.
Personally I would find it rather offensive as I would want to study what I already gotten in peace.
On the other hand I would not mind seeing a list of available products at the end of the email so I could go and have a look if I wanted to as long it is not too pushy!
It's a little bit confusing ... the sequence. Squeeze page - opt-in form - sign up - thank you page - confirmation email - download page - free gift.
I'll think about it more in the following days.
